Narrative:

Initial call to tower reporting position which should have told us to enter right downwind for 30. Tower operator (obviously a trainee) told us to enter left downwind. Told tower we were better set up for right downwind. Tower hesitated and said report mid-field left downwind and then said 'stand by.' tower then mixed up a couple of aircraft types calling us a citation (PA-78-140) and the citation a cherokee. Since tower was busy, got on wide left crosswind. Tower advised to watch for cherokee taking off 30 (below our wing). That aircraft then appeared at our 4 O'clock our altitude. 400 ft away and turned into us. We started a right 360 degrees to get away from aircraft and provide spacing on left downwind and advised tower we were entering right 360 degrees: tower trainer called back and said to never do that again as we may not know who's behind us. I advised tower we just missed other aircraft off of 30 and tower fell very silent. I know tower was situationally unaware and should have pressed them to do the right thing.

Narrative: INITIAL CALL TO TWR RPTING POS WHICH SHOULD HAVE TOLD US TO ENTER RIGHT DOWNWIND FOR 30. TWR OPERATOR (OBVIOUSLY A TRAINEE) TOLD US TO ENTER L DOWNWIND. TOLD TWR WE WERE BETTER SET UP FOR R DOWNWIND. TWR HESITATED AND SAID RPT MID-FIELD L DOWNWIND AND THEN SAID 'STAND BY.' TWR THEN MIXED UP A COUPLE OF ACFT TYPES CALLING US A CITATION (PA-78-140) AND THE CITATION A CHEROKEE. SINCE TWR WAS BUSY, GOT ON WIDE L XWIND. TWR ADVISED TO WATCH FOR CHEROKEE TAKING OFF 30 (BELOW OUR WING). THAT ACFT THEN APPEARED AT OUR 4 O'CLOCK OUR ALT. 400 FT AWAY AND TURNED INTO US. WE STARTED A R 360 DEGS TO GET AWAY FROM ACFT AND PROVIDE SPACING ON L DOWNWIND AND ADVISED TWR WE WERE ENTERING R 360 DEGS: TWR TRAINER CALLED BACK AND SAID TO NEVER DO THAT AGAIN AS WE MAY NOT KNOW WHO'S BEHIND US. I ADVISED TWR WE JUST MISSED OTHER ACFT OFF OF 30 AND TWR FELL VERY SILENT. I KNOW TWR WAS SITUATIONALLY UNAWARE AND SHOULD HAVE PRESSED THEM TO DO THE RIGHT THING.
