Narrative:

Flying northwest bound san diego (myf) to san luis obispo (sbp) over class B (TCA) lax VFR on top, clouds at 1500 ft, tops 2600 ft. Used flight following san diego approach, coast approach, la approach going north intended to fly over class B at 12500 ft (which is also the top ceiling of controled airspace). I thought airspace was up to 'but not including' 12500 ft for class B, lax. When controller questioned my intentions for route of flight I stated 12500 ft would be my altitude. 'Above class B' no further problem over TCA. However, I did stay slightly higher, 12510 ft to be sure on top until I checked rule. I spoke to san diego approach TRACON supervisor later to clarify must be 12501.

Narrative: FLYING NW BOUND SAN DIEGO (MYF) TO SAN LUIS OBISPO (SBP) OVER CLASS B (TCA) LAX VFR ON TOP, CLOUDS AT 1500 FT, TOPS 2600 FT. USED FLT FOLLOWING SAN DIEGO APCH, COAST APCH, LA APCH GOING N INTENDED TO FLY OVER CLASS B AT 12500 FT (WHICH IS ALSO THE TOP CEILING OF CTLED AIRSPACE). I THOUGHT AIRSPACE WAS UP TO 'BUT NOT INCLUDING' 12500 FT FOR CLASS B, LAX. WHEN CTLR QUESTIONED MY INTENTIONS FOR RTE OF FLT I STATED 12500 FT WOULD BE MY ALT. 'ABOVE CLASS B' NO FURTHER PROB OVER TCA. HOWEVER, I DID STAY SLIGHTLY HIGHER, 12510 FT TO BE SURE ON TOP UNTIL I CHKED RULE. I SPOKE TO SAN DIEGO APCH TRACON SUPVR LATER TO CLARIFY MUST BE 12501.
