Narrative:

Other captain flew first half of flight. On STAR the #1 engine had 'engine cont #1' advisory. Copilot looked at book and they said we are going, it's ok. 2 days later I thought about it and decided we probably were not legal to takeoff. There has been much confusion as we were able to depart with status message displayed. Then, no, we had to check with maintenance and MEL, then yes it's ok to depart without contacting maintenance. I was thinking yes it's ok to takeoff if we have a message once we leave the gate. It's the old, tired someone else is flying and checked it complacency mode. Message never returned in flight when recall button pushed. Tired, complacent, and influenced by others.
