Narrative:
We were at 24000 ft proceeding south on the east side of a long thin line of thunderstorms about 5 mi from the mkc VOR. The radar painted a hold (clear space about 5 mi wide with light rain about 5 mi wide (green) on each side. Tops in the area were 24500 maximum. I turned on seat belt sign. Made a PA. Turned igniters to 'flight.' reduced speed to .68-280 KTS, and turned on anti ice. We were about 1/2 way through, we hit severe turbulence. We went from 24000 to 24800 to 24400 ft in a 5 to 8 second period. No side movement, then we were in smooth air again. 1 passenger and 2 flight attendants were hurt. The beverage cart came off the deck and landed on them plus they hit the ceiling and floor twice. They should have been seated. I gave 5-7 mins notice.
