Narrative:

I flew to merritt island airport to pick up 'canard pusher' update. (A safety report maintenance recommendation sheet for rutan aircraft.) merritt airport is a busy uncontrolled airport. I monitored the radio 123.05 from 5 mi north and made regular position reports. The traffic was using and calling out runway 29. I called downwind, base final to 29, but was in error flying the downwind base and final to runway 11. An ultralight had landed and was forced to go around. I was rested, well relaxed and was totally in error. I know that airport. The one clue which triggered it was a cessna on upwind which I fell in trail with. The cessna turned north and I continued in the wrong pattern. I learned and will always xchk my compass.
