Narrative:

Handed off from las departure to ZLA and assigned 35000 ft. First officer responded 'climb to FL350.' 1 min later, first officer said 'confirm FL350 for air carrier.' center said 'affirmative, climb to FL350.' climbing through 32500 ft center said 'air carrier say altitude.' I responded 32500 ft. He said 'you were assigned FL310, descend and maintain 31000 ft immediately, you have traffic at FL330 and 10 mi.' we descended to 31000 ft immediately there was no conflict or near miss. Neither one of us remember being assigned to FL310 before the incident. I was talking to the company frequency giving las operations our out, off, ETA, and fuel information when we were initially assigned FL350. We don't believe it was our mistake but if it was, some possible factors were: 1) it was our 6TH leg of the day, 2) we were on duty for over 12 hours, 3) it was almost midnight by our body clock.
