Narrative:

I was on a landing approach to grants municipal airport, NM, when my gear would not extend. I tried to manually extend it and that did not work either. I had heard that a solenoid in the power pack is continuously hot whenever the master is on and that it has a tendency to overheat. So I decided to turn off the master and allow it to cool. I flew around in circles south of the airport for about 30 mins and then successfully lowered the gear. I was told a service bulletin has been issued, but I think more pilots should be aware of an alternative to an intentional gear up landing.

Title: AN SMA CHARTER PLT COULD NOT GET HIS LNDG GEAR DOWN USING NORMAL OR MANUAL PROCS.

Narrative: I WAS ON A LNDG APCH TO GRANTS MUNICIPAL ARPT, NM, WHEN MY GEAR WOULD NOT EXTEND. I TRIED TO MANUALLY EXTEND IT AND THAT DID NOT WORK EITHER. I HAD HEARD THAT A SOLENOID IN THE PWR PACK IS CONTINUOUSLY HOT WHENEVER THE MASTER IS ON AND THAT IT HAS A TENDENCY TO OVERHEAT. SO I DECIDED TO TURN OFF THE MASTER AND ALLOW IT TO COOL. I FLEW AROUND IN CIRCLES S OF THE ARPT FOR ABOUT 30 MINS AND THEN SUCCESSFULLY LOWERED THE GEAR. I WAS TOLD A SVC BULLETIN HAS BEEN ISSUED, BUT I THINK MORE PLTS SHOULD BE AWARE OF AN ALTERNATIVE TO AN INTENTIONAL GEAR UP LNDG.
