Narrative:

I was level at 12000 ft MSL on an IFR flight plan. Departure control had given me a heading direct to my destination. Departure control advised me of traffic at 12 O'clock, 10 mi, B-757, opposite direction, level 13000 ft MSL. Our closure rate was very rapid, I asked for a turn 20 degrees left for wake turbulence avoidance. I did not encounter any wake turbulence. I am sending this report because I don't think I should have been placed in that situation, especially with a B-757. The salt lake city FSDO has issued a letter to operators regarding B-757 wake avoidance, then they put one directly over me with 1000 ft altitude separation. I appreciate the controller giving me 'direct' to my destination. However, I don't like being put in that situation. I don't know what the result would have been if I had not altered my course. Just thought I'd pass this along in the interest of safety, especially after all the horror stories about B-757 wakes. I don't want to be read about in some report of an accident.

Title: AN ATX SMT PLT FEARS THE DREADED B-757 WAKE TURB.

Narrative: I WAS LEVEL AT 12000 FT MSL ON AN IFR FLT PLAN. DEP CTL HAD GIVEN ME A HDG DIRECT TO MY DEST. DEP CTL ADVISED ME OF TFC AT 12 O'CLOCK, 10 MI, B-757, OPPOSITE DIRECTION, LEVEL 13000 FT MSL. OUR CLOSURE RATE WAS VERY RAPID, I ASKED FOR A TURN 20 DEGS L FOR WAKE TURB AVOIDANCE. I DID NOT ENCOUNTER ANY WAKE TURB. I AM SENDING THIS RPT BECAUSE I DON'T THINK I SHOULD HAVE BEEN PLACED IN THAT SIT, ESPECIALLY WITH A B-757. THE SALT LAKE CITY FSDO HAS ISSUED A LETTER TO OPERATORS REGARDING B-757 WAKE AVOIDANCE, THEN THEY PUT ONE DIRECTLY OVER ME WITH 1000 FT ALT SEPARATION. I APPRECIATE THE CTLR GIVING ME 'DIRECT' TO MY DEST. HOWEVER, I DON'T LIKE BEING PUT IN THAT SIT. I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE RESULT WOULD HAVE BEEN IF I HAD NOT ALTERED MY COURSE. JUST THOUGHT I'D PASS THIS ALONG IN THE INTEREST OF SAFETY, ESPECIALLY AFTER ALL THE HORROR STORIES ABOUT B-757 WAKES. I DON'T WANT TO BE READ ABOUT IN SOME RPT OF AN ACCIDENT.
