Narrative:
I was flying in mountain wave lift, climbing through 14000 ft MSL. Lift was 400-600 FPM. Since it appeared that I may be able to climb above 18000 ft, I had called ZAB and activated the 'soaring window' per a LOA with our local soaring club (I had not yet entered the window, which begins at 18000 ft). I also reported my approximately position. I then switched back to 122.9 to monitor other glider traffic (with center's permission). I had been flying inverted for about 5 mins when I saw a 727 approaching from east toward abq. I noticed the other aircraft at about 1 mi. I continued my course until after he passed, then rolled upright and turned to avoid any turbulence caused by the airliner. I don't know if he saw me. Prevention ideas: our soaring club will talk to ATC and remind them that we are often over moriarty at 12000-15000 ft. All pilots must remember 'see and avoid.' an IFR flight plan or a larger aircraft does not relieve a pilot of his responsibility to watch for other traffic.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NMAC BTWN GLIDER AND ACR LGT IN PROX TO APCH RTE. SAILPLANE ACTIVITY.
Narrative: I WAS FLYING IN MOUNTAIN WAVE LIFT, CLBING THROUGH 14000 FT MSL. LIFT WAS 400-600 FPM. SINCE IT APPEARED THAT I MAY BE ABLE TO CLB ABOVE 18000 FT, I HAD CALLED ZAB AND ACTIVATED THE 'SOARING WINDOW' PER A LOA WITH OUR LCL SOARING CLUB (I HAD NOT YET ENTERED THE WINDOW, WHICH BEGINS AT 18000 FT). I ALSO RPTED MY APPROX POS. I THEN SWITCHED BACK TO 122.9 TO MONITOR OTHER GLIDER TFC (WITH CTR'S PERMISSION). I HAD BEEN FLYING INVERTED FOR ABOUT 5 MINS WHEN I SAW A 727 APCHING FROM E TOWARD ABQ. I NOTICED THE OTHER ACFT AT ABOUT 1 MI. I CONTINUED MY COURSE UNTIL AFTER HE PASSED, THEN ROLLED UPRIGHT AND TURNED TO AVOID ANY TURB CAUSED BY THE AIRLINER. I DON'T KNOW IF HE SAW ME. PREVENTION IDEAS: OUR SOARING CLUB WILL TALK TO ATC AND REMIND THEM THAT WE ARE OFTEN OVER MORIARTY AT 12000-15000 FT. ALL PLTS MUST REMEMBER 'SEE AND AVOID.' AN IFR FLT PLAN OR A LARGER ACFT DOES NOT RELIEVE A PLT OF HIS RESPONSIBILITY TO WATCH FOR OTHER TFC.
