Narrative:

Had been asked for license and physical by FAA jump seat when doing this, received pushback clearance. Started both engines and received taxi clearance. Saw tractor on left side and got wave from driver (not a salute). I waved back (not a salute) and released brakes. Aircraft moved slightly (about 1 ft) when I realized that I had not received 'headset unplug' intercom communication and stopped abruptly. That is when jump seat rider noticed we had moved. Received proper 'salute' and proceeded to taxi. Neither the tractor operator nor I used the proper hand signal or ground communication. Did not see the man on the ground microphone. I'll never again take a friendly wave as a salute. Supplemental information from acn 260731: as we began to taxi, intercom activated. One member of pushback crew was still on headset and connected to aircraft.
