Narrative:

#1 DME malfunctioned. Distance from fix displayed different than ATC radar showed. No flag displayed. ATC cleared us for a back course approach. Departed final altitude on approach after calling fix inbound. Started normal rate of descent. When going through 2100 ft, ATC called 1 mi from fix. We leveled off. At all times we had visual contact with ground and airport environment. DME was replaced by maintenance.
