Narrative:

On dec/xx/93, as the on-duty day pilot, after being briefed by the night pilot, I accepted a flight to ZZZ hospital. The WX was clear and visibility appeared to be 15 mi or better. After reaching an altitude of 3000 ft, I could see some shallow ground fog had formed south of our location. I requested ceiling and visibility and anything that they might have on ZZZ. He responded with XXX (which was not applicable) and abc which had high scattered clouds and 6 mi in fog. As we continued toward ZZZ, I could see that the fog was shallow and varied north thickness from dense in some areas to thin and wispy in the majority of the area. I elected to continue to ZZZ and see what conditions were like at the hospital. Upon arriving over the hospital I descended to approximately 500 ft and did my prelndg check for low reconnaissance of the landing area. The fog was thinner over the hospital area and appeared to be no thicker than 75- 100 ft. I determined that a landing could be made safety but due to the time of day (shortly after sunrise) the fog might increase in intensity and we could be stuck on the ground until it burned off. I advised flight communication and the crew and I elected to land. I made a normal and uneventful approach to the pad and landed at AM29. As the visibility up through the fog appeared to be not as good as the visibility down through it, I decided to remain at the hospital until the fog dissipated. I phoned WX service for ceiling and visibility at xxd, xxe and xxf. All 3 were acceptable with visibility of 6 mi. Soon after landing the ground fog had dissipated markedly and at XB00 we departed ZZZ for xxd. The return trip was uneventful.

Title: AN EMS SMT HELI LANDED IN FOG TO PICK UP A PATIENT.

Narrative: ON DEC/XX/93, AS THE ON-DUTY DAY PLT, AFTER BEING BRIEFED BY THE NIGHT PLT, I ACCEPTED A FLT TO ZZZ HOSPITAL. THE WX WAS CLR AND VISIBILITY APPEARED TO BE 15 MI OR BETTER. AFTER REACHING AN ALT OF 3000 FT, I COULD SEE SOME SHALLOW GND FOG HAD FORMED S OF OUR LOCATION. I REQUESTED CEILING AND VISIBILITY AND ANYTHING THAT THEY MIGHT HAVE ON ZZZ. HE RESPONDED WITH XXX (WHICH WAS NOT APPLICABLE) AND ABC WHICH HAD HIGH SCATTERED CLOUDS AND 6 MI IN FOG. AS WE CONTINUED TOWARD ZZZ, I COULD SEE THAT THE FOG WAS SHALLOW AND VARIED N THICKNESS FROM DENSE IN SOME AREAS TO THIN AND WISPY IN THE MAJORITY OF THE AREA. I ELECTED TO CONTINUE TO ZZZ AND SEE WHAT CONDITIONS WERE LIKE AT THE HOSPITAL. UPON ARRIVING OVER THE HOSPITAL I DSNDED TO APPROX 500 FT AND DID MY PRELNDG CHK FOR LOW RECONNAISSANCE OF THE LNDG AREA. THE FOG WAS THINNER OVER THE HOSPITAL AREA AND APPEARED TO BE NO THICKER THAN 75- 100 FT. I DETERMINED THAT A LNDG COULD BE MADE SAFETY BUT DUE TO THE TIME OF DAY (SHORTLY AFTER SUNRISE) THE FOG MIGHT INCREASE IN INTENSITY AND WE COULD BE STUCK ON THE GND UNTIL IT BURNED OFF. I ADVISED FLT COM AND THE CREW AND I ELECTED TO LAND. I MADE A NORMAL AND UNEVENTFUL APCH TO THE PAD AND LANDED AT AM29. AS THE VISIBILITY UP THROUGH THE FOG APPEARED TO BE NOT AS GOOD AS THE VISIBILITY DOWN THROUGH IT, I DECIDED TO REMAIN AT THE HOSPITAL UNTIL THE FOG DISSIPATED. I PHONED WX SVC FOR CEILING AND VISIBILITY AT XXD, XXE AND XXF. ALL 3 WERE ACCEPTABLE WITH VISIBILITY OF 6 MI. SOON AFTER LNDG THE GND FOG HAD DISSIPATED MARKEDLY AND AT XB00 WE DEPARTED ZZZ FOR XXD. THE RETURN TRIP WAS UNEVENTFUL.
