Narrative:

Once again I find myself writing another report to NASA in the blatant misuse of the 'reduced rest' rules at xy airlines. The reason for this is we just received our december schedules. After reviewing the trips, I found it very interesting to find that no less than 29 percent of the trips used 'reduced rest' for overnights. This includes the infamous 'high speed' or continuous duty. I have enclosed 2 examples of these scheduling nightmares. If you will please note the layover times I have circled on the examples. Example #1 is really just a continuous duty with '2' extra mins of rest! Also, let's not forget that the far's state that 'transportation local in nature' can be part of the rest period. (I know I rest well in a hotel van.) example #2 is a continuous duty that has 2 more legs of flying the next morning after plus or minus 5 hours at the hotel. There is no way to get more than a 4 hour nap! These are only 2 examples of the creative scheduling done here at air carrier xy. I believe the flying public has the right to a well rested crew and, as you can see, this does not always happen. I wonder how our customers would feel if they knew what really goes on at the 'commuter level.' it is interesting to note the FAA was so concerned about this problem that they were going to have to look at the 'monetary aspect' to the airlines. This makes sense especially here at xy air carrier with record profits and a number Y ranking in size for regional airlines.
