Narrative:

This was to be my student's first full hour of solo flight. The student preflted the aircraft, did his run-up, and took off. While the student had been out to the practice area during his training, he was not checked out to solo in the practice area. After the student took off, he departed the patter for practice area. While the WX was good in terms of visibility and ceiling, it was hazy. The student then became disoriented and called operations on unicom and informed us he was unsure of his position. The flight school's chief instructor then called approach control and requested a discrete frequency to have the student call. We then told the student to change frequencys and to tell approach that he was a student pilot who was unsure of his position and to request vectors back to the airport. Upon contact with approach he was told to squawk 7700 and then was given vectors back to the airport. In about 2 or 3 mins he had found the field. He then made an uneventful landing. When questioned upon why he had left the traffic pattern, he said that he felt it would be ok. I then explained that he needed more dual instruction in navigation before he should go out to the practice area again. He agreed with my judgement.

Title: STUDENT PLT MADE UNAUTH DEP FROM THE LCL TFC PATTERN AND GOT LOST, RESULTING IN A FLT ASSIST BY ATC.

Narrative: THIS WAS TO BE MY STUDENT'S FIRST FULL HR OF SOLO FLT. THE STUDENT PREFLTED THE ACFT, DID HIS RUN-UP, AND TOOK OFF. WHILE THE STUDENT HAD BEEN OUT TO THE PRACTICE AREA DURING HIS TRAINING, HE WAS NOT CHKED OUT TO SOLO IN THE PRACTICE AREA. AFTER THE STUDENT TOOK OFF, HE DEPARTED THE PATTER FOR PRACTICE AREA. WHILE THE WX WAS GOOD IN TERMS OF VISIBILITY AND CEILING, IT WAS HAZY. THE STUDENT THEN BECAME DISORIENTED AND CALLED OPS ON UNICOM AND INFORMED US HE WAS UNSURE OF HIS POS. THE FLT SCHOOL'S CHIEF INSTRUCTOR THEN CALLED APCH CTL AND REQUESTED A DISCRETE FREQ TO HAVE THE STUDENT CALL. WE THEN TOLD THE STUDENT TO CHANGE FREQS AND TO TELL APCH THAT HE WAS A STUDENT PLT WHO WAS UNSURE OF HIS POS AND TO REQUEST VECTORS BACK TO THE ARPT. UPON CONTACT WITH APCH HE WAS TOLD TO SQUAWK 7700 AND THEN WAS GIVEN VECTORS BACK TO THE ARPT. IN ABOUT 2 OR 3 MINS HE HAD FOUND THE FIELD. HE THEN MADE AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG. WHEN QUESTIONED UPON WHY HE HAD LEFT THE TFC PATTERN, HE SAID THAT HE FELT IT WOULD BE OK. I THEN EXPLAINED THAT HE NEEDED MORE DUAL INSTRUCTION IN NAV BEFORE HE SHOULD GO OUT TO THE PRACTICE AREA AGAIN. HE AGREED WITH MY JUDGEMENT.
