Narrative:
ZKC provided flight following beginning at approximately 25 NM south of mkc. I had departed mkc for bum at approximately XA05 CST. ZKC at about XA25 reported they had received a complaint from mci approach that I had violated the TCA and the approach to mci runway 1. To the best of my knowledge, my altitude was below TCA (5000 ft) limits throughout departure from mkc. I was also 10 NM east of an approach to mci runway 1. I did hear center in contact with another aircraft to the west which was traveling from K81 toward noah's ark. The aircraft had a very similar call sign. I also heard center advise an airliner that there was small aircraft traffic (in conflict?) at 3400 ft on his approach. I believe the problem may have arisen from 2 aircraft with nearly identical call signs operating in the same area.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN SMA PENETRATED THE MCI TCA.
Narrative: ZKC PROVIDED FLT FOLLOWING BEGINNING AT APPROX 25 NM S OF MKC. I HAD DEPARTED MKC FOR BUM AT APPROX XA05 CST. ZKC AT ABOUT XA25 RPTED THEY HAD RECEIVED A COMPLAINT FROM MCI APCH THAT I HAD VIOLATED THE TCA AND THE APCH TO MCI RWY 1. TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE, MY ALT WAS BELOW TCA (5000 FT) LIMITS THROUGHOUT DEP FROM MKC. I WAS ALSO 10 NM E OF AN APCH TO MCI RWY 1. I DID HEAR CTR IN CONTACT WITH ANOTHER ACFT TO THE W WHICH WAS TRAVELING FROM K81 TOWARD NOAH'S ARK. THE ACFT HAD A VERY SIMILAR CALL SIGN. I ALSO HEARD CTR ADVISE AN AIRLINER THAT THERE WAS SMA TFC (IN CONFLICT?) AT 3400 FT ON HIS APCH. I BELIEVE THE PROB MAY HAVE ARISEN FROM 2 ACFT WITH NEARLY IDENTICAL CALL SIGNS OPERATING IN THE SAME AREA.
