Narrative:

Aircraft cleared to 4000 ft via ACARS before pushback. 5000 ft inadvertently set in altitude window on aircraft altitude alerter. On initial call to departure, first officer stated that we were climbing to 5000 ft. ATC came back with a 'roger.' this could probably have been prevented if we had double-checked altitude set prior to takeoff. There was no conflict.
