Narrative:

Air carrier X at 300-500 ft on final, cleared to land on lax runway 24R following an light transport. Suddenly air carrier Y flew over the top of us within 50-100 ft away. We took evasive action and then did a go around. Tower issued a go around to air carrier Y. We then were vectored for another approach and landing, this time on lax runway 24L. After a normal landing we then talked to the tower chief who told us we were in the right place. Lax has a lot of runways: 24R, 24L, 25R, 25L, etc, with the continual problem of possible confusion. I suggest at lax that the tower and the aircraft cleared to land both give an extra affirmation of clearance. The tower chief at lax told us that we had been cleared for runway 24R.

Title: MULTIPLE RWY OP PARALLEL RWYS ACR Y APCH TO WRONG RWY HAD NMAC WITH ACR X. EVASIVE ACTION TAKEN.

Narrative: ACR X AT 300-500 FT ON FINAL, CLRED TO LAND ON LAX RWY 24R FOLLOWING AN LTT. SUDDENLY ACR Y FLEW OVER THE TOP OF US WITHIN 50-100 FT AWAY. WE TOOK EVASIVE ACTION AND THEN DID A GAR. TWR ISSUED A GAR TO ACR Y. WE THEN WERE VECTORED FOR ANOTHER APCH AND LNDG, THIS TIME ON LAX RWY 24L. AFTER A NORMAL LNDG WE THEN TALKED TO THE TWR CHIEF WHO TOLD US WE WERE IN THE RIGHT PLACE. LAX HAS A LOT OF RWYS: 24R, 24L, 25R, 25L, ETC, WITH THE CONTINUAL PROB OF POSSIBLE CONFUSION. I SUGGEST AT LAX THAT THE TWR AND THE ACFT CLRED TO LAND BOTH GIVE AN EXTRA AFFIRMATION OF CLRNC. THE TWR CHIEF AT LAX TOLD US THAT WE HAD BEEN CLRED FOR RWY 24R.
