Narrative:

In cruise at FL270 got a TCASII TA. Noted traffic on TCASII display at 12 O'clock climbing through 26100 ft. Immediately began getting a TCASII RA to 'climb, climb' etc. We, captain flying, began an immediate climb as directed by TCASII. We announced to ATC what we were doing. They had not issued any TA's at this point. We eventually 'topped out' at 27700 ft and sighted traffic as he (military fgt) passed beneath (at 26700 ft according to TCASII) and slightly to our right. We immediately descended back to FL270. This is the first 'real' TCASII I've had in almost 4 yrs on the large transport/widebody transport equipment. In all previous TCASII sits we have had enough warning or an early visual and did not have to follow the TCASII RA. For me, this was the one incident that makes TCASII 'worth' everything that has been put into it. It was critical to a safe resolution of this situation.
