Narrative:

Shortly after takeoff from runway 8L, the master caution and hydraulic annunciator lights illuminated followed by a decrease in 'a' system quantity and #1 a pump low pressure light. Because I suspected an 'a' system hydraulic failure, I lowered the landing gear while 'a' system was still available. We declared an emergency, completed the loss of 'a' system checklist in our QRH and executed an uneventful landing to 8L. We cleared the runway at taxiway delta using differential braking and shutdown after stopping. Our aircraft required towing back to our parking ramp.
