Narrative:

Airplane ahead on right closed traffic, turned downwind. I took off with tower clearance. I had announced a west departure on calling for taxi clearance. Did not reiterate to tower. (Ground and tower position same individual working 2 frequencys.) tower did not say touch-and-go traffic ahead was to make right pattern. Other aircraft on training flight. Instructor stated a '50 ft' miss. Not that close, but close enough to be startling. I saw other aircraft in time to determine we were not on collision course, and I took no evasive action. Typical procedures by tower would have helped: 1) clear or deny my right turnout, 2) state that traffic in closed pattern to right, 3) better clearing on part of me and other pilot.
