Narrative:

We were given a delay due to thunderstorms in the dtw area. It was decided to taxi into the holding area for 26L grr, shut both engines down with APU running and wait. While in the holding area, just as we were completing shutdown and talking to dispatch and ground about delays, the lead flight attendant asked if we could possibly get some increased ventilation by opening the galley door. The cabin temperature had reached 105 degrees even with the APU and engine running on taxi out. I said I thought that would be ok. In the next 15-20 seconds it took the lead flight attendant to disarm the door, I realized this may not be a good idea. The wind caught the door, flew it open and out went the slide, cover and all, to the ground. When it struck the ground, it inflated. Company maintenance and dispatch were called. It was then decided to get fire truck/rescue escort to help us return back to the gate area.
