Narrative:

Cleared for a published visual (stadium) approach to runway 24R lax. Unable to keep runway in sight. Published turn using santa monica VOR. HSI set to runway localizer using RMI for VOR radial turn, #1 needle normally for ADF and #2 needle for VOR. Of 150 aircraft, this is only plane that is opposite. Reading wrong needle, missed turn. As localizer started across, started 30 degree right turn. But still crossed into runway 25L&right approach course. Only conflict known was aircraft on approach to runway 25L 2.5 mi in trail of us.
