Narrative:

In sum: a very high time pilot asked to ferry another pilot's aircraft. The flight was planned for 2 hours and 10 mins. The aircraft ran out of fuel after 1 hour and 48 mins. The reporter landed in a field and broke off the left main gear. There was other damage. The reporter was not injured. After the landing, the owner told the pilot that the aircraft now held only 18 gallons fuel, not the 26 that was stamped on the fuel cap. The reporter insists that he had filled the tank to the brim before departure. WX was no factor. The fuel gauge showed 1/4 full when the engine quit. After the landing, the fuel gauge showed empty.
