Narrative:
I had not flown aircraft type. Asked instructor pilot/owner to let me momentarily fly aircraft. He turned the controls over to me. I was right seat, flying with instructor pilot in left seat. We saw light aircraft maneuvering (turns, etc) 3 or 4 mi away. I made 2 clearing turns and an approach to stall. I lost sight of maneuvering airplane and when we re-acquired visual contact he was headed toward us level. I turned to right to clear. He was continuing in a straight line and passed to our left about 1000 ft away. I turned left behind him and returned control of aircraft to instructor pilot.
