Narrative:

We were on an IFR flight into the lax basin and decided to continue IFR for the approach into toa. Aircraft are held at 9000 ft to cross lax approach path, so coast took us south through toa localizer then back to a 330 degree heading at 3000 ft to descend and capture the localizer. OM is at 5.6 DME. About 9 DME coast said to contact the tower, 124.0. I switched and due to other xmissions, I couldn't check in immediately. I did then hear small aircraft xyz check in at 2000 ft 6.9 DME on the localizer -- my position! We were at 6.9 DME but luckily at 2100 ft. Tower cleared xyz for runway 29L. I had my husband stop descent, then checked in and asked who was at my position. Tower didn't answer but asked xyz to squawk abcd. As I looked back in the 5 O'clock position, I saw an orange and white small aircraft in a hard left turn. I asked tower if we were cleared to continue the approach. He cleared us to land runway 29R. Afterward, in the tower, he said that the other plane was 'for the left.' we had not been warned of any traffic. We were under positive control. We were almost dead.

Title: IFR TRAINING FLT HAS NMAC WITH ACFT APCHING FROM BEHIND.

Narrative: WE WERE ON AN IFR FLT INTO THE LAX BASIN AND DECIDED TO CONTINUE IFR FOR THE APCH INTO TOA. ACFT ARE HELD AT 9000 FT TO CROSS LAX APCH PATH, SO COAST TOOK US S THROUGH TOA LOC THEN BACK TO A 330 DEG HDG AT 3000 FT TO DSND AND CAPTURE THE LOC. OM IS AT 5.6 DME. ABOUT 9 DME COAST SAID TO CONTACT THE TWR, 124.0. I SWITCHED AND DUE TO OTHER XMISSIONS, I COULDN'T CHK IN IMMEDIATELY. I DID THEN HEAR SMA XYZ CHK IN AT 2000 FT 6.9 DME ON THE LOC -- MY POS! WE WERE AT 6.9 DME BUT LUCKILY AT 2100 FT. TWR CLRED XYZ FOR RWY 29L. I HAD MY HUSBAND STOP DSCNT, THEN CHKED IN AND ASKED WHO WAS AT MY POS. TWR DIDN'T ANSWER BUT ASKED XYZ TO SQUAWK ABCD. AS I LOOKED BACK IN THE 5 O'CLOCK POS, I SAW AN ORANGE AND WHITE SMA IN A HARD L TURN. I ASKED TWR IF WE WERE CLRED TO CONTINUE THE APCH. HE CLRED US TO LAND RWY 29R. AFTERWARD, IN THE TWR, HE SAID THAT THE OTHER PLANE WAS 'FOR THE L.' WE HAD NOT BEEN WARNED OF ANY TFC. WE WERE UNDER POSITIVE CTL. WE WERE ALMOST DEAD.
