Narrative:

After leaving great harbor cay, because of low ceilings limiting our altitude, I was unable to contact ZMA. Continuing west I contacted mia approach. I was told to standby. Still flying west I waited, before reaching the ADIZ I called again. I told the controller I wanted an IFR clearance and gave my location. The controller instructed me to contact her west of the ADIZ. I entered the ADIZ wbound and contacted the controller after crossing. At that time she realized I had been squawking 1200. She gave me a clearance to fll airport. After completing customs, I was given a phone number and person to contact. I explained what had happened and was told that no action would be taken. I pride myself in being a very proficient pilot, but in this case, I didn't communicate some information that I should have, i.e., saying I'm squawking 1200, saying I needed a clearance before entering. The controller might have avoided this situation by radar identing me before instructing me to enter and contact her on the west side of the ADIZ. In the future I'll give more information or ask for more information. Being from another part of the country and not totally understanding the ADIZ and the mechanics of how to work this part of the system.

Title: SMA CROSSES ADIZ WHILE AWAITING ATC CLRNC.

Narrative: AFTER LEAVING GREAT HARBOR CAY, BECAUSE OF LOW CEILINGS LIMITING OUR ALT, I WAS UNABLE TO CONTACT ZMA. CONTINUING W I CONTACTED MIA APCH. I WAS TOLD TO STANDBY. STILL FLYING W I WAITED, BEFORE REACHING THE ADIZ I CALLED AGAIN. I TOLD THE CTLR I WANTED AN IFR CLRNC AND GAVE MY LOCATION. THE CTLR INSTRUCTED ME TO CONTACT HER W OF THE ADIZ. I ENTERED THE ADIZ WBOUND AND CONTACTED THE CTLR AFTER XING. AT THAT TIME SHE REALIZED I HAD BEEN SQUAWKING 1200. SHE GAVE ME A CLRNC TO FLL ARPT. AFTER COMPLETING CUSTOMS, I WAS GIVEN A PHONE NUMBER AND PERSON TO CONTACT. I EXPLAINED WHAT HAD HAPPENED AND WAS TOLD THAT NO ACTION WOULD BE TAKEN. I PRIDE MYSELF IN BEING A VERY PROFICIENT PLT, BUT IN THIS CASE, I DIDN'T COMMUNICATE SOME INFO THAT I SHOULD HAVE, I.E., SAYING I'M SQUAWKING 1200, SAYING I NEEDED A CLRNC BEFORE ENTERING. THE CTLR MIGHT HAVE AVOIDED THIS SIT BY RADAR IDENTING ME BEFORE INSTRUCTING ME TO ENTER AND CONTACT HER ON THE W SIDE OF THE ADIZ. IN THE FUTURE I'LL GIVE MORE INFO OR ASK FOR MORE INFO. BEING FROM ANOTHER PART OF THE COUNTRY AND NOT TOTALLY UNDERSTANDING THE ADIZ AND THE MECHANICS OF HOW TO WORK THIS PART OF THE SYS.
