Narrative:

Clearance received via ACARS was: slc SLC094 MTU303 mtu...tower cleared as filed. Copilot thought he understood that after takeoff he was to turn right after reaching 8000 ft to intercept the 094 degree radial outbound from slc. The slc 4 departure says after reaching 8000 ft, radar vectors to assigned route. After starting the turn, departure control ask where we were going. We said we were turning to intercept the outbound course. They said we were only cleared to maintain runway heading. Appears to be some confusion as to what we were actually cleared for.

Title: FLC OF LGT ACFT DEVIATED FROM ASSIGNED CLRNC TRACK BY TURNING DURING CLB PRIOR TO DEP CTL VECTOR.

Narrative: CLRNC RECEIVED VIA ACARS WAS: SLC SLC094 MTU303 MTU...TWR CLRED AS FILED. COPLT THOUGHT HE UNDERSTOOD THAT AFTER TKOF HE WAS TO TURN R AFTER REACHING 8000 FT TO INTERCEPT THE 094 DEG RADIAL OUTBOUND FROM SLC. THE SLC 4 DEP SAYS AFTER REACHING 8000 FT, RADAR VECTORS TO ASSIGNED RTE. AFTER STARTING THE TURN, DEP CTL ASK WHERE WE WERE GOING. WE SAID WE WERE TURNING TO INTERCEPT THE OUTBOUND COURSE. THEY SAID WE WERE ONLY CLRED TO MAINTAIN RWY HDG. APPEARS TO BE SOME CONFUSION AS TO WHAT WE WERE ACTUALLY CLRED FOR.
