Narrative:

I was receiving dual instruction for a tailwheel endorsement. This was my 4TH landing that day. I have approximately 3 hours of tailwheel time to date. While landing an small aircraft on runway 32 at steamboat springs, my home airport, the south windsock indicating 5-10 KTS at 230 degrees (a 90 degree cross from the left). I was in a forward slip, to flair, left wing low, left main on runway, tracking the centerline. As the right main came down, the plane started to turn to the left, full right rudder was applied. The plane continued to turn left. The rotation about the roll axis could not be stopped and the right wingtip contacted the ground. The plane came to a stop in approximately 300 ft on its wheels on the left side of the runway aligned with the runway centerline. My feeling is that we were hit with a gust of wind from approximately 185 degrees or a left quartering tailwind, causing the left wing to be lifted and the loss of directional control.

Narrative: I WAS RECEIVING DUAL INSTRUCTION FOR A TAILWHEEL ENDORSEMENT. THIS WAS MY 4TH LNDG THAT DAY. I HAVE APPROX 3 HRS OF TAILWHEEL TIME TO DATE. WHILE LNDG AN SMA ON RWY 32 AT STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, MY HOME ARPT, THE S WINDSOCK INDICATING 5-10 KTS AT 230 DEGS (A 90 DEG CROSS FROM THE L). I WAS IN A FORWARD SLIP, TO FLAIR, L WING LOW, L MAIN ON RWY, TRACKING THE CTRLINE. AS THE R MAIN CAME DOWN, THE PLANE STARTED TO TURN TO THE L, FULL R RUDDER WAS APPLIED. THE PLANE CONTINUED TO TURN L. THE ROTATION ABOUT THE ROLL AXIS COULD NOT BE STOPPED AND THE R WINGTIP CONTACTED THE GND. THE PLANE CAME TO A STOP IN APPROX 300 FT ON ITS WHEELS ON THE L SIDE OF THE RWY ALIGNED WITH THE RWY CTRLINE. MY FEELING IS THAT WE WERE HIT WITH A GUST OF WIND FROM APPROX 185 DEGS OR A L QUARTERING TAILWIND, CAUSING THE L WING TO BE LIFTED AND THE LOSS OF DIRECTIONAL CTL.
