Narrative:

Flight ewr-mco, cruising at FL280, 80 mi south chs, TCASII alert to climb at 300 FPM for traffic below. We climbed to approximately 28500 ft and told ATC. They advised an small transport jet was climbing to FL270. ATC was busy and did not call the traffic to us. TCASII system worked perfectly and adequate separation remained. If ATC advised us of traffic climbing in front of us we would not have left the assigned altitude.
