Narrative:

Just after airborne, during maximum gross weight takeoff runway 16R slc, right engine explosion and failure occurred. An emergency was declared, emergency checklist accomplished. Right VFR pattern flown, crash fire rescue equipment equipment requested and emergency return (VFR) accomplished to runway 16R slc. Heavy weight landing made and crash fire rescue equipment inspection of aircraft requested by me (captain). After an 'all clear' determination of aircraft condition made by crash fire rescue equipment fire chief, I requested crash fire rescue equipment equipment accompany aircraft taxi to gate. Gate return uneventful, passenger deplanement normal, engine fail cause unknown. Many favorable passenger comments.
