Narrative:

On downwind to land runway 1R at las. Approach control was vectoring us to the runway, level at 6100 ft MSL. 11 DME south of field the GPWS sounded 'terrain' and then 'pull up.' I climbed to 7000 ft MSL while copilot called approach. Controller said 6100 ft was the vectoring altitude. The landing was uneventful. I called the tower on the phone and was told others have experienced similar alerts.
