Narrative:

Upon turning downwind for a downwind departure from cdw to N51, we had leveled off at approximately 1500 ft MSL and spotted an small aircraft. I immediately banked hard to the left to avoid the other aircraft. We were cleared on course direct to N51 from cdw by tower. Had I flown more during the 3 weeks (my plane was being worked on) I would not have been as rusty, and spotted the other plane sooner. I consider flying at least 2 hours a week my personal minimum for flying safely. There was a second pilot in my aircraft. We should have seen the other plane sooner.
