Narrative:

Maintenance and cabin logbooks were not on aircraft when I arrived. Should have called maintenance immediately but got involved in cockpit preflight and forgot. First officer read before starting engine checklist and I answered that they were aboard. Realized they were not on board when flight attendant had a minor entry to make in cabin log during flight. I should have been more thorough and rechked for logbooks when checklist was read.
