Narrative:

This was my first officer's first line flight in a jet. The WX was perfect VFR, and we had no passenger, so I assigned him this leg to fly. He had successfully completed ground and simulator training at flight safety in this airplane. On the roll, we received the first of 4 rapid changes in our assigned altitude, from 12000 ft to 2000 ft. The first officer made the 2000 ft level off, but immediately blew through the 200 KT air traffic area speed limit. As I corrected him, ATC assigned us 12000 ft, a new heading, and a new frequency, plus FL230 after a 12000 ft crossing restriction at the sjc VOR. I keyed the microphone to clarify 'at' or 'at or above' 12000 ft as my first officer approached 12000 ft with the vsi nearly pegged. ATC responded 'at' while we shot through 12000 ft in spite of my free hand pushing forward against my first officer's control input. We overshot by about 600 ft.

ATC RESPONDED 'AT' WHILE WE SHOT THROUGH 12000 FT IN SPITE OF MY FREE HAND PUSHING FORWARD AGAINST MY FO'S CTL INPUT. WE OVERSHOT BY ABOUT 600 FT.
