Narrative:

Pilot crew returned to gate after pushback for a flight with automatic spoiler inoperative message on overhead panel and spoiler handle was inoperative (no ratcheting on handle). I troubleshot system using the maintenance manuals. I replaced the automatic spoiler switching unit and the spoiler control box. Message was removed and spoilers operated normally. To expedite the maintenance chkout procedures, I called on the telephone to our maintenance room and asked a fellow mechanic to look up the maintenance manual operational chkout procedures. I performed all the procedures according to what he told me. The aircraft was ready to depart after working on it for a total of 1 hour. I signed aircraft off. After it was all over, I realized another chkout had not been performed because of the confusion of what was wrong and the parts that had been changed. The plane had already departed. The mechanic in the line room had only looked in the maintenance manual for part of the chkout. I got the information from him over the telephone. I now fully realize I should never use the telephone just to save time. Information can and will be lost passing information from person to person. I should have taken the time to go into the line room and look all chkout procedures up myself because I understood what was necessary. The aircraft nevertheless was repaired with no further problems.

Title: AN ACR MLG FLEW WITHOUT ALL NECESSARY MAINT BEING COMPLETED AND THE PAPERWORK WAS NOT COMPLETE. THE ACFT WORKED PROPERLY.

Narrative: PLT CREW RETURNED TO GATE AFTER PUSHBACK FOR A FLT WITH AUTO SPOILER INOP MESSAGE ON OVERHEAD PANEL AND SPOILER HANDLE WAS INOP (NO RATCHETING ON HANDLE). I TROUBLESHOT SYS USING THE MAINT MANUALS. I REPLACED THE AUTO SPOILER SWITCHING UNIT AND THE SPOILER CTL BOX. MESSAGE WAS REMOVED AND SPOILERS OPERATED NORMALLY. TO EXPEDITE THE MAINT CHKOUT PROCS, I CALLED ON THE TELEPHONE TO OUR MAINT ROOM AND ASKED A FELLOW MECH TO LOOK UP THE MAINT MANUAL OPERATIONAL CHKOUT PROCS. I PERFORMED ALL THE PROCS ACCORDING TO WHAT HE TOLD ME. THE ACFT WAS READY TO DEPART AFTER WORKING ON IT FOR A TOTAL OF 1 HR. I SIGNED ACFT OFF. AFTER IT WAS ALL OVER, I REALIZED ANOTHER CHKOUT HAD NOT BEEN PERFORMED BECAUSE OF THE CONFUSION OF WHAT WAS WRONG AND THE PARTS THAT HAD BEEN CHANGED. THE PLANE HAD ALREADY DEPARTED. THE MECH IN THE LINE ROOM HAD ONLY LOOKED IN THE MAINT MANUAL FOR PART OF THE CHKOUT. I GOT THE INFO FROM HIM OVER THE TELEPHONE. I NOW FULLY REALIZE I SHOULD NEVER USE THE TELEPHONE JUST TO SAVE TIME. INFO CAN AND WILL BE LOST PASSING INFO FROM PERSON TO PERSON. I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THE TIME TO GO INTO THE LINE ROOM AND LOOK ALL CHKOUT PROCS UP MYSELF BECAUSE I UNDERSTOOD WHAT WAS NECESSARY. THE ACFT NEVERTHELESS WAS REPAIRED WITH NO FURTHER PROBS.
