Narrative:

We had just landed on runway 25L and exited at taxiway 36. The local controller cleared us to taxi across runway 25R and contact ground control. While rolling off 25R we called ground control and were advised to hold short of taxiway J and pass behind an eastbound taxiing aircraft. The runway and taxiway are about 100 ft apart, so I could physically have done as the ground controller requested. However, due to a variety of reasons, I continued onto taxiway J ahead of the eastbound taxiing aircraft. The other aircraft was still about 500 ft from the intersection and posed no threat. The local controller had an airplane in position for takeoff on runway 25R, waiting only for us to clear his runway. And most importantly, the runway hold short bars are positioned about 90 ft from the runway edge, and about 10 ft from the taxiway edge. To hold short of the taxiway means stopping on the runway side of the hold short line. A recent letter from a controller to another publication expressed quite emphatically the importance of landing airplanes clearing the runway completely by continuing across the hold short line prior to stopping. Herein lies the paradox: controller a wants me gone and controller B doesn't want me on his pavement for another 20 seconds. And there's no place to hide! This scenario is relatively common at lax, but conflicts are usually avoided by 1 airplane adjusting taxiing speed so that no one needs to make a complete stop. Some kind of published procedure addressing this situation would be helpful.

Title: COMMUTER ACFT CLRED TO EXIT RWY, HOLD SHORT TAXIWAY. UNABLE TO DO BOTH DUE PLACEMENT OF HOLD LINES.

Narrative: WE HAD JUST LANDED ON RWY 25L AND EXITED AT TAXIWAY 36. THE LCL CTLR CLRED US TO TAXI ACROSS RWY 25R AND CONTACT GND CTL. WHILE ROLLING OFF 25R WE CALLED GND CTL AND WERE ADVISED TO HOLD SHORT OF TAXIWAY J AND PASS BEHIND AN EBOUND TAXIING ACFT. THE RWY AND TAXIWAY ARE ABOUT 100 FT APART, SO I COULD PHYSICALLY HAVE DONE AS THE GND CTLR REQUESTED. HOWEVER, DUE TO A VARIETY OF REASONS, I CONTINUED ONTO TAXIWAY J AHEAD OF THE EBOUND TAXIING ACFT. THE OTHER ACFT WAS STILL ABOUT 500 FT FROM THE INTXN AND POSED NO THREAT. THE LCL CTLR HAD AN AIRPLANE IN POS FOR TKOF ON RWY 25R, WAITING ONLY FOR US TO CLR HIS RWY. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE RWY HOLD SHORT BARS ARE POSITIONED ABOUT 90 FT FROM THE RWY EDGE, AND ABOUT 10 FT FROM THE TAXIWAY EDGE. TO HOLD SHORT OF THE TAXIWAY MEANS STOPPING ON THE RWY SIDE OF THE HOLD SHORT LINE. A RECENT LETTER FROM A CTLR TO ANOTHER PUBLICATION EXPRESSED QUITE EMPHATICALLY THE IMPORTANCE OF LNDG AIRPLANES CLRING THE RWY COMPLETELY BY CONTINUING ACROSS THE HOLD SHORT LINE PRIOR TO STOPPING. HEREIN LIES THE PARADOX: CTLR A WANTS ME GONE AND CTLR B DOESN'T WANT ME ON HIS PAVEMENT FOR ANOTHER 20 SECONDS. AND THERE'S NO PLACE TO HIDE! THIS SCENARIO IS RELATIVELY COMMON AT LAX, BUT CONFLICTS ARE USUALLY AVOIDED BY 1 AIRPLANE ADJUSTING TAXIING SPD SO THAT NO ONE NEEDS TO MAKE A COMPLETE STOP. SOME KIND OF PUBLISHED PROC ADDRESSING THIS SITUATION WOULD BE HELPFUL.
