Narrative:

As trip captain I asked the co-captain to obtain engine start clearance. I was not in cockpit to observe this procedure. Co-captain stated he received engine start, taxi to 5L and squawk code (clrncs). The ground controller with broken english said we were not cleared to taxi as we moved toward the active runway (5L). We apologized for the misunderstanding of the clearance and said it would not happen again. The tower operator inquired of our actions. Again, we apologized. He accepted our apology for the misunderstanding and asked that it not occur again. We rogered his request. There was no other aircraft moving on our side of the airport. There were no conflicts with other aircraft. Procedure and protocol were violated due to a language barrier.
