Narrative:

After missing localizer back course runway 22 to aby, I executed missed approach, then saw a hole and the ground. At 2000 ft MSL, I asked vld approach and received permission to cancel IFR and go VFR to aby. When I called aby tower to advise them, they appeared surprised and they said field was IFR. I then asked for and got a 'SVFR' to land. At all times I was VFR under a 900-1200 ft AGL ceiling. I easily saw aby and was given permission to land after a jet who was touching down on runway 22. I should not have cancelled IFR after missing the localizer back course 22 when I saw the ground, but should have finished the missed approach procedure and reattempt the localizer back course runway 22.

Title: SMT EXECUTING MISSED APCH, CANCELS IFR AND REQUESTS SVFR.

Narrative: AFTER MISSING LOC BACK COURSE RWY 22 TO ABY, I EXECUTED MISSED APCH, THEN SAW A HOLE AND THE GND. AT 2000 FT MSL, I ASKED VLD APCH AND RECEIVED PERMISSION TO CANCEL IFR AND GO VFR TO ABY. WHEN I CALLED ABY TWR TO ADVISE THEM, THEY APPEARED SURPRISED AND THEY SAID FIELD WAS IFR. I THEN ASKED FOR AND GOT A 'SVFR' TO LAND. AT ALL TIMES I WAS VFR UNDER A 900-1200 FT AGL CEILING. I EASILY SAW ABY AND WAS GIVEN PERMISSION TO LAND AFTER A JET WHO WAS TOUCHING DOWN ON RWY 22. I SHOULD NOT HAVE CANCELLED IFR AFTER MISSING THE LOC BACK COURSE 22 WHEN I SAW THE GND, BUT SHOULD HAVE FINISHED THE MISSED APCH PROC AND REATTEMPT THE LOC BACK COURSE RWY 22.
