Narrative:

During cruise at FL330, #1 engine oil filter bypass lights came on. We went into abnormals section of the pilots manual. The manual says if unable to extinguish the light the engine must be shut down. We were unable to extinguish the light so we shut down the #1 engine. We informed center of the problem, descended to a lower altitude 20000 ft. We were about 65 NM from atl so we opted to land at that airport. It was the closest and most suitable. We declared an emergency so that emergency equipment would be standing by on arrival. Approach and landing normal. Turned aircraft over to maintenance in atl without any further problems.
