Narrative:

While taxiing in runway 24 runup pad we were notified that flames were coming from our #1 engine. The cause was a tailpipe fire. The proper checklist was performed and our indications showed that the fire was going out (tgt 250 degree) when the crash equipment arrived. Foam was applied to the #1 engine without the knowledge of the flight crew. Communication was established with the flight crew after the engine was foamed. In the future, it would be very helpful if the emergency crew would contact the flight crew before any action was taken.
