Narrative:

We were level at FL240 and had just flown out of a cloud bank into the clear. ZTL advised us of traffic at our 11 O'clock position at FL230 and it appeared to be level, i.e., holding 1000 ft separation on our TCASII. As the traffic closed to within 3-5 NM, our TCASII target illuminated red with 0 altitude separation and the TCASII commanded a climb at about 2000 FPM. We could not see any traffic either at FL240 or FL230, but we initiated an immediate climb to FL245 and advised center of our actions. Center said that there was no other traffic at FL240 and that the traffic at our position was still at FL230. Our TCASII system had tested ok on the previous flight and appeared to function properly at all times.

Title: AN MLG ACR ACFT TOOK EVASIVE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO WHAT WAS PROBABLY A FALSE TCASII WARNING.

Narrative: WE WERE LEVEL AT FL240 AND HAD JUST FLOWN OUT OF A CLOUD BANK INTO THE CLR. ZTL ADVISED US OF TFC AT OUR 11 O'CLOCK POS AT FL230 AND IT APPEARED TO BE LEVEL, I.E., HOLDING 1000 FT SEPARATION ON OUR TCASII. AS THE TFC CLOSED TO WITHIN 3-5 NM, OUR TCASII TARGET ILLUMINATED RED WITH 0 ALT SEPARATION AND THE TCASII COMMANDED A CLB AT ABOUT 2000 FPM. WE COULD NOT SEE ANY TFC EITHER AT FL240 OR FL230, BUT WE INITIATED AN IMMEDIATE CLB TO FL245 AND ADVISED CTR OF OUR ACTIONS. CTR SAID THAT THERE WAS NO OTHER TFC AT FL240 AND THAT THE TFC AT OUR POS WAS STILL AT FL230. OUR TCASII SYS HAD TESTED OK ON THE PREVIOUS FLT AND APPEARED TO FUNCTION PROPERLY AT ALL TIMES.
