Narrative:

Cleared downwind for runway 24R visual to lax off santa monica 070 radial, profile descent. Rolled out of base leg, high and lined up on 25L. First officer called the error and correction taken. No conflict. Contributing factors: right base blocked overview from left seat. Account haze and glare, north runways (24R/left) did not stand out nearly as clear as south runways. Flight director called for further turn to south, reasons unknown. Suggestion: pilots tend to verify airport with runway confign. In the case of airports such as lax, 'count the runways.'
