Narrative:

At above noted location, loud boom, adverse yaw, engine fire indication: followed SOP. Engine fire procedure, engine shutdown, fuel dump of 65000 pounds to landing weight of 360000 pounds. A 2 engine landing at sfo with emergency vehicles standing by. Reverser in transit light on. First officer continuous contact with ATC, approach control, and tower. So immediately and continuously in contact with company on local frequency; maintained communication with first cabin attendant on intercom and passenger on PA. On inspection on the ground, there were 4 or 5 punctures of lower wing skin just aft of leading edge slats inboard of #1 engine, access panels in that area were hanging down, several dents farther back on wing and one dent in the faring of inboard flap extension mechanism. Also a small puncture in the forward edge of the left inboard fuel tank caused a slight fuel leak on ground inspection. Cabin preparation for evacuate/evacuation not accomplished; additional stress and panic of such preparation not warranted under the circumstances and condition of aircraft. Aft section of engine, nacelle, all of reverser system gone from explosion. Supplemental information from acn 221884. We were in a climb about 20 NM offshore under center control own navigation, INS, direct bebop. At about 9000 ft a loud boom was heard and a shudder felt. Captain was hand flying. Before anything else could be said the #1 engine fire warning went off and the so stated: 'engine fire.' captain flew and I shut down #1 engine with the so as per our immediate actions. The fire light went out almost immediately after the fire bottle was discharged. I flew the aircraft while captain and so went through the 2 engine approach/landing and 2 engine go around checklists. The captain briefed the approach. Airport then took control of the aircraft. We declared an emergency and had the trucks standing by for our landing. Supplemental information from acn 221759. At one point during the flight, a flight attendant reported that a passenger stated that the left engine had fallen off of the aircraft. A report was made to airlines on the noted frequency that such an unconfirmed report had been made. The undersigned crew member made an inspection of the engine, noting that the engine had not fallen from the aircraft, but that there had been considerable damage to the after section of the subject engine. Such information was subsequently reported to the company on the noted frequency.

A RPT WAS MADE TO AIRLINES ON THE NOTED FREQ THAT SUCH AN UNCONFIRMED RPT HAD BEEN MADE. THE UNDERSIGNED CREW MEMBER MADE AN INSPECTION OF THE ENG, NOTING THAT THE ENG HAD NOT FALLEN FROM THE ACFT, BUT THAT THERE HAD BEEN CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE TO THE AFTER SECTION OF THE SUBJECT ENG. SUCH INFO WAS SUBSEQUENTLY RPTED TO THE COMPANY ON THE NOTED FREQ.
