Narrative:

Captain was flying, I was on the radios. ATC assigned a heading of 280 degree. I confirmed the heading, repeated to the captain, then commenced to set next fix in LORAN. That's when ATC commanded 'stop your turn immediately! What do you think you're doing?' I looked at HSI saw we were turning right through northeast to a heading of 080 degree. Captain commanded that I lie and tell ATC that we were assigned heading of 080 degree. New york was incredulous to say the least. We were then given the correct heading to fly and did so. Causes -- first of all and most important the captain's attitude played a major role. The man has an intense hatred of the entire planet and everyone and everything on it. While one is ranting and raving and yelling and screaming constantly and non- stop all of the time, performance and judgement naturally will be affected. Throw in the fact that the man thinks all ATC are bumbling, incompetent idiots fools (he yells at and argues with them, especially female controllers), well, the stage is set for disaster. My role that I failed at was in not being more vigilant. I had assumed, incorrectly, that the captain had heard the controller's instruction, my readback, and the heading to fly as I repeated it to him. As I commenced with other duties, I failed to pay attention to what he was doing. Another area I failed at was insisting the captain review the complicated SID before takeoff which he refused to do. Solutions: management has been informed that if the captain doesn't change his attitude to one more consistent with safety, I will refuse to fly with him. Beyond that, I don't know what to do.

CAPT COMMANDED THAT I LIE AND TELL ATC THAT WE WERE ASSIGNED HDG OF 080 DEG. NEW YORK WAS INCREDULOUS TO SAY THE LEAST. WE WERE THEN GIVEN THE CORRECT HDG TO FLY AND DID SO. CAUSES -- FIRST OF ALL AND MOST IMPORTANT THE CAPT'S ATTITUDE PLAYED A MAJOR ROLE. THE MAN HAS AN INTENSE HATRED OF THE ENTIRE PLANET AND EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING ON IT. AS I COMMENCED WITH OTHER DUTIES, I FAILED TO PAY ATTN TO WHAT HE WAS DOING. ANOTHER AREA I FAILED AT WAS INSISTING THE CAPT REVIEW THE COMPLICATED SID BEFORE TKOF WHICH HE REFUSED TO DO. SOLUTIONS: MGMNT HAS BEEN INFORMED THAT IF THE CAPT DOESN'T CHANGE HIS ATTITUDE TO ONE MORE CONSISTENT WITH SAFETY, I WILL REFUSE TO FLY WITH HIM. BEYOND THAT, I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO.
