Narrative:

We flew the aircraft with the cockpit hot air mixing valve disconnected, assuming we had MEL relief. Even though this presents no problem for flight, we later found out that, in fact, we did not have MEL relief. Then we obtained a ferry permit from the FAA for a flight back to home base, where a new mixing valve was installed.
