Narrative:

While descending for an approach/landing at O'hare airport TCASII gave a traffic warning (9700 ft) with our aircraft was passing 10000 ft. Neither pilot had traffic in sight. ATC had not called any traffic to our attention. TCASII issued an 'RA' warning and a climb was immediately initiated to 10700 ft and the captain observed a light single engine aircraft pass direction under our aircraft moving right to left. When small aircraft was clear, we advised chicago center and continued our descent to landing. Supplemental information from acn 217326. TA turned to RA and we were still unable to pick up the traffic visually, even with the help of TCASII position. When the RA warning sounded since we did not have the traffic we complied with the warning instructions. We climbed to 10700 ft in accordance with air carrier procedures.
