Narrative:

At approximately XA15 am I was flying an small aircraft sel aircraft from fws IFR to elp. On takeoff I changed to departure control and receive one message to maintain runway heading and maintain 3000 ft. At this point radio failure. Trans stuck all frequencys and smelled small electrical fire squawked 7700 maintain VFR returned to ftw. Shut down all electrical radios and contacted tower on hand held radio. Landed and taxi in to fdo. A check by radio maintenance found on small aircraft sel aircraft the yoke can contact the microphone wiring box under the panel on pilot side causing a complete trans block. Box found loose. ATR. Tower seem to think I should have changed squawk to 7600 after min. Didn't have time and was not sure of the type emergency I had.

AT THIS POINT RADIO FAILURE. TRANS STUCK ALL FREQS AND SMELLED SMALL ELECTRICAL FIRE SQUAWKED 7700 MAINTAIN VFR RETURNED TO FTW. SHUT DOWN ALL ELECTRICAL RADIOS AND CONTACTED TWR ON HAND HELD RADIO. LANDED AND TAXI IN TO FDO. A CHK BY RADIO MAINT FOUND ON SMA SEL ACFT THE YOKE CAN CONTACT THE MIKE WIRING BOX UNDER THE PANEL ON PLT SIDE CAUSING A COMPLETE TRANS BLOCK. BOX FOUND LOOSE. ATR. TWR SEEM TO THINK I SHOULD HAVE CHANGED SQUAWK TO 7600 AFTER MIN. DIDN'T HAVE TIME AND WAS NOT SURE OF THE TYPE EMER I HAD.
