Narrative:

I was approaching day in contact with approach control (VFR). He (approach controller) announced day, I believe, at 1 O'clock and 5. Mistakenly, I idented ffo AFB as day and he released me. Momentarily, I headed toward ffo AFB. When I realized my confusion and checked with day tower -- who vectored me toward day. I do not believe I got more than about 1/2 mi off course (given by approach), but might have. This will be a serious lesson to me about identing right airport before accepting 'visual.' however, with 3 major airports within 10 mi, it probably would be a good idea to have approach or tower briefly monitor a recently released VFR flight. While with my experience I should have known better, it would have been a simple and possibly serious mistake for a newer pilot.

Title: SMT PLT STARTS APCH TO WRONG ARPT. REALIZES ERROR, CONTACT TWR AGAIN FOR RADAR VECTORS.

Narrative: I WAS APCHING DAY IN CONTACT WITH APCH CTL (VFR). HE (APCH CTLR) ANNOUNCED DAY, I BELIEVE, AT 1 O'CLOCK AND 5. MISTAKENLY, I IDENTED FFO AFB AS DAY AND HE RELEASED ME. MOMENTARILY, I HEADED TOWARD FFO AFB. WHEN I REALIZED MY CONFUSION AND CHKED WITH DAY TWR -- WHO VECTORED ME TOWARD DAY. I DO NOT BELIEVE I GOT MORE THAN ABOUT 1/2 MI OFF COURSE (GIVEN BY APCH), BUT MIGHT HAVE. THIS WILL BE A SERIOUS LESSON TO ME ABOUT IDENTING RIGHT ARPT BEFORE ACCEPTING 'VISUAL.' HOWEVER, WITH 3 MAJOR ARPTS WITHIN 10 MI, IT PROBABLY WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE APCH OR TWR BRIEFLY MONITOR A RECENTLY RELEASED VFR FLT. WHILE WITH MY EXPERIENCE I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A SIMPLE AND POSSIBLY SERIOUS MISTAKE FOR A NEWER PLT.
