Narrative:

Routing received jfk -- merit -- orw -- V16 -- woons -- as filed. During climb clearance received 'heading 030 join lga 055 degree radial merit.' due to strong westerly wind, it took several mins to join the radial, at which time turned right and proceeded to track it. Passed merit by 10 mi and still on lga 055 degree radial (incorrectly). Center inquired if we were on a 'heading' to which I responded (having instantly realized that we passed merit) that we were assigned lga 055 merit hfd! ATC then asked what routing after hfd and I replied (from memory of previous flts) hfd V3 woons. The controller then cleared us direct orw V16 bos, which was the actual routing. Engaged in non-essential conversation at the time (though we were at cruise). I had the wrong routing in mind because the many times I have gone over merit the next fix has been hfd. The routing was new and I should have thoroughly reviewed prior to departure. However, in the interest of maintaining schedule (and since first officer usually gets clearance) I often just review departure and initial part of the routing during departure briefing while deferring the rest until later.

Title: AN LTT ACR CREW FLEW OUT THE WRONG RADIAL ON DEP. A DIFFERENT CLRNC FROM THAT WHICH WAS EXPECTED WAS RECEIVED AND ACKNOWLEDGED BUT NOT FLOWN.

Narrative: ROUTING RECEIVED JFK -- MERIT -- ORW -- V16 -- WOONS -- AS FILED. DURING CLB CLRNC RECEIVED 'HDG 030 JOIN LGA 055 DEG RADIAL MERIT.' DUE TO STRONG WESTERLY WIND, IT TOOK SEVERAL MINS TO JOIN THE RADIAL, AT WHICH TIME TURNED R AND PROCEEDED TO TRACK IT. PASSED MERIT BY 10 MI AND STILL ON LGA 055 DEG RADIAL (INCORRECTLY). CTR INQUIRED IF WE WERE ON A 'HDG' TO WHICH I RESPONDED (HAVING INSTANTLY REALIZED THAT WE PASSED MERIT) THAT WE WERE ASSIGNED LGA 055 MERIT HFD! ATC THEN ASKED WHAT ROUTING AFTER HFD AND I REPLIED (FROM MEMORY OF PREVIOUS FLTS) HFD V3 WOONS. THE CTLR THEN CLRED US DIRECT ORW V16 BOS, WHICH WAS THE ACTUAL ROUTING. ENGAGED IN NON-ESSENTIAL CONVERSATION AT THE TIME (THOUGH WE WERE AT CRUISE). I HAD THE WRONG ROUTING IN MIND BECAUSE THE MANY TIMES I HAVE GONE OVER MERIT THE NEXT FIX HAS BEEN HFD. THE ROUTING WAS NEW AND I SHOULD HAVE THOROUGHLY REVIEWED PRIOR TO DEP. HOWEVER, IN THE INTEREST OF MAINTAINING SCHEDULE (AND SINCE FO USUALLY GETS CLRNC) I OFTEN JUST REVIEW DEP AND INITIAL PART OF THE ROUTING DURING DEP BRIEFING WHILE DEFERRING THE REST UNTIL LATER.
