Narrative:

While flight training in a light twin small aircraft with the owner over the catalina channel and on top of an overcast we were VFR. I was using the sli VOR and the avx VOR for position orientation. We were going through engine shutdown and xfeed procedures when I suddenly realized that my student had switched to the lax VOR and I did not see him do this. I immediately called coast approach and turned the airplane south. I don't believe we entered the TCA for coast approach did not say anything.
